Botox

Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable cosmetic containing a neurotoxin that inhibits communications between your nerves and your muscles. That neurotoxin is called botulinum toxin, and it stops targeted muscles from making involuntary movements while it’s active, which is usually for about four months.

Altering certain muscles with Botox can result in subtle, natural-looking changes to your appearance. To maintain your results, you can get follow-up injections of Botox once your results fade away.

What does Botox treat?

One of the reasons why fine lines and small wrinkles appear on your face is because of the muscle movements you use to make facial expressions. Over time, these movements can lead to the formation of such lines and wrinkles.

By targeting the muscles with the botulinum toxin, you can temporarily relax them and make the lines disappear. Specific wrinkles you can target are:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines
  • Certain lines around your mouth
  • Chin dimples

Your specialist at A to Z Dermatology plans your procedure according to the number of wrinkles you’re targeting and their sizes. They tell you how many injections you’ll need for your session and how long it will take.

Am I a good candidate for Botox injections?

Before your treatment, you attend a brief consultation with your provider at A to Z Dermatology to make sure you can safely get Botox injections. Your provider considers multiple factors, including your physical health, your goals, and your age. You might be a good candidate for Botox injections if you’re:

  • Over 18
  • Under 65
  • Generally healthy
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Not allergic to the products’ ingredients

The team at A to Z Dermatology also makes sure you have realistic expectations for your results. While Botox is highly effective in reducing facial lines for months at a time, it doesn't reduce skin laxity and can’t treat other age-related features, like jowls or age spots.

If you have goals that Botox can’t achieve, the expert team at A to Z Dermatology can recommend other services available that might be a better fit for you.
